The study is a deep dive into the Lebanese migration issue. Its goal is not only to analyze this complex phenomenon and its various parameters but also to assess its impact on the demographic, social, and economic structure of a country as compact as Lebanon.
Demographic fluctuations have profound effects on the economy, politics, and society. When these changes are significant, they can radically transform a nation’s structure. This is especially true for Lebanon, whose small size and strategic position make it exceptionally vulnerable to vast demographic movements. This vulnerability has been a major concern for over a century. The country has always been at the crossroads of migratory movements, experiencing both immigration and emigration waves. The migration dynamics began with challenges like the silkworm crisis and escalated during tumultuous periods like the civil war and the economic crisis. Concurrently, immigration was fueled by significant regional events, such as the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire, the occupation of Palestine, and prolonged conflicts in Syria. These phenomena, combined with other factors, shaped Lebanon’s demographic fabric, with profound implications on its socio-economic structure.
The Citizen Foundation presents a unique blend. Its presence in Lebanon helps prioritize the policy options and centralize the efforts of many different groups of Lebanese talents in the world who are committed in helping the country and who are active in finding solutions. Upstream, its topics are discussed with bilateral and multilateral players and various stakeholders, which ensures their interest and support. During the work, it involves specialists with experience in the Lebanese public administration, as well as university students who will spread the debate in their institutions. Then, the end products will be debated in Lebanon, presented to the government, opposition groups, and opinion leaders. The purpose is to create the debate and lobby for implementation, internally and externally.
